Terms of use

These terms cover the dotPen app for Mac and the dotpen.app website. By using either, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use them.

dotPen is made and owned by Dotbrain LLC (“Dotbrain”, “we”, “us”). Questions about these terms go to support@dotbrainhq.com.

dotPen is free

dotPen costs nothing. There’s no account to create, no subscription and no in-app purchase.

• App Store downloads are also covered by Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement.
• The source code is open source under the MIT License, which covers what you can do with the code itself.

Your files

Your files, comments and notes are yours. dotPen keeps them on your Mac and never sends them to us. It doesn’t change your files, except to write a tick when you tick a task box. Please keep your own backups, as you would with any app.

AI agents

dotPen can pass your comments to AI agents you connect, such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor. Those tools are made by other companies and run under their own terms. We don’t control them, and we aren’t responsible for what an agent does with your files or your comments.

Using the website

You can browse, read and share links to this site freely. Please don’t try to break it, overload it, or use it to do anything illegal.

Our name and logo

The dotPen and Dotbrain names, the dotPen logo, and the words and images on this site belong to Dotbrain. You can mention dotPen and link to us, but please don’t use our names or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you or your product without asking first.

Your privacy

How we handle information is in our privacy policy.

No warranty

We work hard to make dotPen and this site reliable, but both are provided as is. We can’t promise they’ll always work as you expect or be free of mistakes.

Limit of liability

To the extent the law allows, Dotbrain isn’t liable for indirect or consequential losses that come from using dotPen or this website, including lost files or data. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer protection law that can’t be waived.

Changes to these terms

If we change these terms, we’ll update the date at the top.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Mexico, United States, unless the consumer law where you live says otherwise.
